{"id":125,"date":"2011-10-07T01:30:55","date_gmt":"2011-10-07T01:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.agilityfeat.com\/?p=125"},"modified":"2011-10-07T01:30:55","modified_gmt":"2011-10-07T01:30:55","slug":"assorted-140-character-thoughts-from-accus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/agilityfeatpanama.com\/en\/blog\/2011\/10\/assorted-140-character-thoughts-from-accus\/","title":{"rendered":"Assorted 140 character thoughts from #ACCUS"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_127\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agilityfeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/2011-09-23_09-52-06_607.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-127\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-127\" title=\"2011-09-23_09-52-06_607\" src=\"https:\/\/agilityfeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/2011-09-23_09-52-06_607-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-127\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">@TobiasMayer leading keynote games<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I tend to write blog posts that are too long.\u00a0 Which is why sometimes I don\u2019t blog as often as I should.<\/p>\n<p>But I really want to share everything with you that I learned at <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.agilecoachcamp.us\/\">Agile Coach Camp US<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/search\/%23ACCUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#ACCUS<\/a>) in Columbus Ohio last week.<\/p>\n<p>So instead of a long blog post that I feel obligated to make perfect, I\u2019m going to \u201cblog tweet\u201d a bunch of short thoughts\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Thanks first go to <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/search\/Paul_Boos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@Paul_Boos<\/a> and the rest of the volunteers.\u00a0 You did an incredible job &#8211; thanks for making it possible!<\/p>\n<p>Friday AM was <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/tobiasmayer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@TobiasMayer<\/a> leading the keynote games.\u00a0 \u201cFailure Bows\u201d were a big hit, and lasted through the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Failure bow: stick your hands high up in the air, wear stupid grin, and say something like \u201cI failed!\u00a0 This is a learning opportunity!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He had all us walk around the room in that pose, greeting people.\u00a0 Very funny.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_128\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agilityfeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/2011-09-24_12-18-42_9381.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-128\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-132\" title=\"2011-09-24_12-18-42_938\" src=\"https:\/\/agilityfeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/2011-09-24_12-18-42_9381-e1317815491229-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-128\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ideas for helping 50+ ppl projects from a @MichaelSahota session<\/p><\/div>\n<p>He also led a swarming exercise to show how groups band together.\u00a0 It was fun, but didn\u2019t work as he expected.<\/p>\n<p>So I love how <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/tobiasmayer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@TobiasMayer<\/a> took a \u201cfailure bow\u201d himself and proposed an open space session for Saturday to try other ideas with this game.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/tobiasmayer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@TobiasMayer<\/a> also led \u201cfriends and enemies\u201d exercise. Pick an enemy across the room, and keep a friend between you equidistant.\u00a0 Hard to do!<\/p>\n<p>Showed how it\u2019s easier to coordinate large groups when we treat each other as colleagues than jockeying for political positions.<\/p>\n<p>I had the pleasure of walking back to the hotel with <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/tobiasmayer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@TobiasMayer<\/a> once, and it was great to get to know him IRL.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/MichaelSahota\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@MichaelSahota<\/a> led a coaching skills workshop where I met <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/davesharrock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@DaveSharrock<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/indyagilista\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@IndyAgilista<\/a> and we formed a coaching team.<\/p>\n<p>We rotated roles between coach, client, and observer, and coached each other thru real problems.<\/p>\n<p>Very revealing for me.\u00a0 It was a great chance for me to practice the \u201cpowerful questions\u201d I\u2019ve been learning from <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/mspayd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@MichaelSpayd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I realized doing this I was a better coach in that session than I have been with real clients.\u00a0 I was less afraid. (virtual failure bow!)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_129\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agilityfeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/2011-09-23_14-42-33_937.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-129\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-129\" title=\"2011-09-23_14-42-33_937\" src=\"https:\/\/agilityfeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/2011-09-23_14-42-33_937-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-129\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A game of Failure Pattern Poker<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Now I am giving myself permission to fail more (virtual failure bow!) and take more risks with my questions.<\/p>\n<p>The best questions I can ask are those that question the client\u2019s assumptions as well as my own assumptions\/fears about what can be done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDescribe to me what it would look like if you could solve this problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/davesharrock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@DaveSharrock<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/indyagilista\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@IndyAgilista<\/a> were great and I\u2019m grateful to have made their friendship at <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/search\/%23ACCUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#ACCUS<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/mhsutton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@MHSutton<\/a> led a very fun improv session. He delivered side splitting laughter as promised.\u00a0 I felt like I was on \u201cWhose Line is it anyways?\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/mhsutton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@MHSutton<\/a> had us do actual improv skits to loosen up and for team building.\u00a0 Note to self: Bippitby Bippitby Bop! I was \u201cgarbage truck man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I brought \u201cDr Swiffer Wiper\u201d into the game.\u00a0 Best I could come up with, but it seemed to work!<\/p>\n<p>In the PM, I led a session on failure pattern poker.\u00a0 Very grateful to the people who joined in and we had two great tables going.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/gdinwiddie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@GDinwiddie<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/search\/Paul_Boos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@Paul_Boos<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/S2IL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@S2IL<\/a>, &amp; others had gr8 ideas for game revisions, depending on its use for training or retrospectives. Thank you!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_130\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agilityfeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/2011-09-23_14-47-04_740.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-130\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-130\" title=\"2011-09-23_14-47-04_740\" src=\"https:\/\/agilityfeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/2011-09-23_14-47-04_740-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-130\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More Failure Pattern Poker<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It was very fun and I hope to improve on it for future use.<\/p>\n<p>I also attended some great open space sessions that gave me many good ideas.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/S2IL\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@S2IL<\/a> led an interesting discussion on the <a href=\"http:\/\/halfarsedagilemanifesto.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Half Arsed Agile Manifesto<\/a>. How can we use sarcasm and humor with our clients?<\/p>\n<p>I think the answer was carefully, and with their permission, but it\u2019s a valuable way to mirror back behaviors to clients.<\/p>\n<p>Just going over the Half Arsed Agile Manifesto created a lot of great discussion.<\/p>\n<p>Also had an interesting discussion with <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/gerrykirk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@GerryKirk<\/a> &amp; others from smaller cities.\u00a0 We discussed how to build agile communities.<\/p>\n<p>Charlottesville already has an impressive per-capita agile group in AgileCville, thanks to the efforts of many excellent folks.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_131\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agilityfeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/2011-09-24_10-29-21_353.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-131\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-131\" title=\"2011-09-24_10-29-21_353\" src=\"https:\/\/agilityfeat.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/2011-09-24_10-29-21_353-e1317815362134-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-131\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Discussion points on building agile communities in small cities<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Gave me ideas for inexpensive one-day agile conf or pay as you can training. Perhaps get several biz&#8217;s to jointly bring in CSM training?<\/p>\n<p>I had lunch at a table with <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/OlafLewitz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@OlafLewitz<\/a> who told me how we should stop talking about projects, and focus on product dev instead. Loved it.<\/p>\n<p>The side conversations with <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/agiletoolkit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@AgileToolkit<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/DavidBulkin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@DavidBulkin<\/a> and others were always fun and fruitful.\u00a0 It was great to see everyone.<\/p>\n<p>The beers at night, networking, and discussions were also very valuable.\u00a0 I wish I had everyone\u2019s twitter name to thank for the good times.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/DerekWWade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@DerekWWade<\/a> was hilarious marveling over Murphy\u2019s waitress\u2019s triple major at OSU and twitter. Didn\u2019t write her twitter down or I\u2019d shoutout.<\/p>\n<p>Still waiting for people to start the tag <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/search\/realtime\/%23ShitThatAngelineSays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#ShitThatAngelineSays<\/a> after many funny talks with <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/agilemeister\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@AgileMeister<\/a>. Scared to start it myself.<\/p>\n<p>And of course there were quite a few hilarious conversations that I\u2019m not going to be the first one to tweet about.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/DerekWWade\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@DerekWWade<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/davesharrock\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@DaveSharrock<\/a> probably know what I\u2019m thinking of.<\/p>\n<p>In one last tweet, what did I learn at <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/#%21\/search\/%23ACCUS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#ACCUS<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>As an agile coach, you sometimes feel alone at the client.<\/p>\n<p>Shouting into the storm, and bummed that people are slow to join you, even after you show them there is a better way to do things.<\/p>\n<p>Agile coaches all face similar challenges and fears.\u00a0 Facing them and questioning them for ourselves and our clients is how we bring value.<\/p>\n<p>Okay, that was 3 last tweets.\u00a0 \ud83d\ude09\u00a0 What can I say?
